Susan Williams Matthews, Associate of the Firm, concentrates her practice in the areas of Civil Litigation, Banking, Construction, Employment, Municipal Law and Foreclosures. Ms. Matthews presently serves as the Vice President of the Catawba County Bar Association and is a member of the Board of Directors for the United Arts Council of Catawba County. She is also a 2013 graduate of Leadership Catawba.. Ms. Matthews earned her undergraduate degree from Furman University (B.A., magna cum laude, 2005) and her law degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (J.D. with Honors, 2008). During law school, Susan was published in the North Carolina Banking Institute Journal and served as Publications Editor. She was also honored with the Eugene Gressman—Daniel H. Pollitt Award for oral advocacy skills. At Furman Ms. Matthews was a D.H. Gilpatrick History Scholar; a member of Phi Eta Sigma, Pi Sigma Alpha and Phi Alpha Theta honor societies; a member of the Chi Omega Fraternity; and a member of the Mock Trial team. Susan devoted a significant portion of her undergraduate class work to studying underdeveloped countries, including studies abroad in South Africa, Namibia, Swaziland, Cuba, Guatemala, El Salvador and Mexico. Ms. Matthews previously practiced as an Associate with Parker Poe Adams & Bernstein LLP in Charlotte, N.C. focusing on municipal law and litigation in both state and federal courts. Susan has represented and advised clients on matters involving zoning and land use regulation, incorporation, annexation, eminent domain, tort liability, public records, open meetings law and contracts. In 2009, she was a co-presenter at the North Carolina Municipal Attorneys’ Conference on subdivision bonds and developer defaults. A native of Hickory, North Carolina, and a third generation Catawba County attorney, Susan graduated from Hickory High School in 2001. At Hickory High she was Captain of the Varsity Swim Team, a member of the National Honor Society and Beta Club, and an award-winning Mock Trial participant. She also volunteers her time with the Wills for Heroes program, assisting emergency responders with estate planning. She served as a volunteer for the North Carolina Center on Actual Innocence from 2005 through 2009.
