Stephen Mason Thomas, Managing Partner of the Firm, centers his practice in the areas of Civil Litigation, Business and Corporate Law, Construction Law and Insurance Defense. He received his undergraduate degree (B.A., 1967) and law degree (J.D., 1970) from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and was a member of Phi Alpha Delta, a John M. Morehead Scholar, and a staff member of the North Carolina Law Review.
Mr. Thomas is a member of the Catawba County, North Carolina, and American Bar Associations, as well as the North Carolina State Bar. He is a past president of the Catawba County Bar Association and the 25th District Bar Association. In addition, he has been elected to membership in the American Board of Trial Advocates. He is a member of the construction law section of the North Carolina Bar Association and the forum on the construction industry of the ABA. Steve is certified as a mediator by the North Carolina State Bar. He is a member of the Defense Research Institute and the North Carolina Association of Defense Attorneys. In 2010 Steve once again was named in the magazine "North Carolina Super Lawyers", an annual publication by Law & Politics, Minneapolis, MN. Listed in the Business Litigation category, he first received this designation in 2008.
Mr. Thomas and his wife, Barbara, are members of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church where he is currently the President of the Church Council. He has also served terms on the Board of the Catawba Science Center, including one as President, and a term on the Board of the Western Piedmont Symphony. Currently, he is a senior active member of the Hickory Rotary Club and is a board member of, and on the Executive Committee of, the SALT Block Foundation (formerly the Catawba Valley Arts and Science Center Foundation), and serves as a Vice-Chair of the Board of Directors of Lenoir-Rhyne University. In addition, Mr. Thomas is a member of the Board of Directors of the UNC School of Law Alumni Association.
