Michael P. Thomas, Partner of the Firm, represents businesses and individuals, employers and employees, plaintiffs and defendants, across a wide variety of matters and industries. Clients find his breadth of knowledge and creative thinking a valuable addition to any legal problem. Clients benefit from Mr. Thomas’ knowledge and analytical insight to approach complex business issues, especially in dealing with the regulatory environments created by the federal government. In litigation, Mr. Thomas has represented clients at hearings, trials, and appeals across the state and around the country. At the deal table, he has advised business clients on their most sensitive matters, whether selling an entire business, negotiating CEO contracts, restructuring significant divisions, or acquiring new assets. Mr. Thomas represents health care providers in all aspects of their business, including contracting with vendors and other providers, financing, acquisitions, Stark and Anti-Kickback compliance, employment law and contracting, HIPAA compliance, and real estate matters. Mr. Thomas spends a significant part of his practice advising employers with regard to employment law matters, and representing both employers and employees in employment litigation, including claims based on contract and trades secret protection and claims relating to civil rights laws. In addition, Mr. Thomas is a certified NC Superior Court Mediator.
A Hickory native, Mr. Thomas was educated in the Hickory Public Schools before he earned his undergraduate degree from Princeton University, where he was a two year letterman in football. He earned his law degree from the Washington and Lee University School of Law. Prior to entering private practice, Mr. Thomas served as law clerk to the Honorable Lacy H. Thornburg, United States District Judge for the Western District of North Carolina.
While practicing in Atlanta with a global law firm, Mr. Thomas took part in that firm’s representation of multiple Fortune 500 companies in complex litigation in state, bankruptcy, and federal courts throughout the country, as well as consulting with that firm’s transactional lawyers advising companies engaged in complex mergers and acquisitions.
Mr. Thomas and his wife, Laura reside in Hickory with their sons – Mason, Emmett, Liam, and Ted.
