Michael Joseph Barnett, Partner of the Firm, centers his practice in the areas of Commercial Litigation, Construction Law, Business and Corporate Law, Insurance Defense and Collections. Mr. Barnett joined Patrick Harper
& Dixon in July, 2003 after practicing law at a firm in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
Mr. Barnett represents corporations and individuals, plaintiffs and defendants, in a variety of business disputes as well as commercial and residential real estate disputes, both before and after a lawsuit has been filed. With regard to his construction law practice, Mike represents owners, contractors and subcontractors in disputes relating to commercial and residential projects. He also defends clients in personal injury and property damage cases and handles collection matters for many of the firm's corporate clients. He has successfully represented clients at all stages of the litigation process, including summary judgment motions, jury trials and at the North Carolina Court of Appeals and the North Carolina Supreme Court.
The Weirton, WV native received his undergraduate degree (B.A., 1998) from the State University of New York at Albany, graduating summa cum laude. As an undergraduate, Mr. Barnett studied at Oxford University, New College. Mike received his law degree (J.D., 2002) with honors from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. During law school, he was a Staff Member of the North Carolina Law Review from 2000 to 2001 and a Symposium Editor from 2001 to 2002 as well as a recipient of the Gressman-Pollitt Award for Appellate Advocacy. He is a member of Phi Beta Kappa.
Mr. Barnett is a member and vice-president of the Catawba County Bar Association and a member of the North Carolina Bar Association. Mike currently is a member of the NCBA's Litigation Section. He is also a member of the North Carolina Association of Defense Attorneys, where he serves on the Executive Board of the Young Lawyers Division, and DRI where he serves on the Young Lawyers Committee and Legislative Liason Subcommittee.
In the community, Mr. Barnett is a member of Viewmont Baptist Church, where he serves as a Deacon, teaches Sunday School and plays on and coaches the church basketball team. He also is a former member of the church's personnel and finance committees. Mike is a member of the Catawba Valley Business Builders Chapter of BNI and a graduate of the Leadership Catawba program offered by the Catawba County Chamber of Commerce.
Mr. Barnett and his wife, Agnese, live in Hickory with their daughter, Nicole.
